Welcome to NG, UK person! Try goofing around different styles of drawing cats, for instance. They've got plenty of personality and emotion that can be showed by different faces and postures. I like your simple layout and composition - it's a good starting point. Also try drawing something you like from the telly, this way the image is pretty fresh in your mind whist drawing it. "Be happy in your work!"
